I am not feeling great today. My head is buzzy. I am sure it is a medication thing and I don't like it one bit. I hope it goes away soon. I have a enough to deal with without feeling like crap.
There is so much sewing to do in my shop and I really need to get busy. I am having trouble motivating myself for some reason.
Hubs is at the school all day today, so he is not distracting me, not that I allow him to distract me.
I am very frustrated with contractors coming and not sending me bids. Or giving me bids that are so unfair and outrageous and then when I call the office I get some woman that has all these excuses when I try to get bids for individual windows and nothing goes down. If I have 10 windows replaced it is four thousand, so let's just do 8 well then it is three thousand nine hundred and ninety nine. What they want is four thousand dollars regardless of the number of windows. I don't get it. I have a budget. So I am told it is tear down and set up of equipment. There is no tear down and set up of equipment these windows are at waist level. I am ready to scream. My Sissie says it is because I am cheap. No I am not going to be ripped off by another contractor. I don't trust them. So frustrating. We live in a very small town these places are less than 1 mile from my house. Let me go get the windows if it costs that much to transport them.
I can hear my Sissie screaming right now as she hates people like me. People who question prices. I question every nail that goes in.
I need to get to work and I need an attitude adjustment.
Have a great and productive day staying positive while you are in the negative.

I would question the pricing too. In building our house our windows were priced out for each window, separately. Of course, that was just for the windows, not installing, and then our framers put the windows in, so that cost was included in our framing cost. Most of our windows were about $225 each from a building supply company. Is there a way you can buy them separately and get a bid from someone just to install? The contractors are gouging everyone with their high priced bids. They are busy with work and will just throw big numbers out there.
ReplyDeleteI am very discouraged, I don't think I could build a house I would kill someone. I don't know how you have done it. Your painter alone would put me over the edge.
DeleteHope you either find an attitude adjustment or a punching bag!
ReplyDeleteI just cried alot and forced myself to sew.
DeleteI would question every nail too.....I guess I'm more like you than Sissie. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI have no clue if $4K is good or bad for 10 windows but as we need to replace windows here I will find out pretty soon. lolz
All I can say is good luck. Hubs is a total stinker and dragging his feet as usual. I am ready to send him to your house.
DeleteUmm, only send him if he has a big roll of $20s in his pocket. *snort*
DeleteWell after we got the $4,000 bid for the door, and then a second that was still over $3,500. We waited, looked at the option of buying the door and finding someone to put it in. Well, under $1500 later, we have the exact door, in a new frame, that we wanted. Yep, compare and question how a rate is determined.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sam. You are just the person I need to talk to.
DeleteYES! Question everything. I am glad my contractor's superintendent is doing the checking for me. In our build, e one sub I had to call directly (propane) gave me a cost for the job. My superintendent was in my hallway listening to me make this call. When I repeated the cost, superintendent swore, pulled out his cell phone, dialed them, and asked to speak with the person I was talking to, saying it was an emergency. May I just say I was glad I wasn't on the receiving end of his phone call. Hearing his side was quite enough. The propane company HE suggested, whom my contractor uses almost exclusively, for some reason, decided to gouge me. Her excuse? "Oh, well she didn't say she was one of your builds."
ReplyDeleteThis is so unfair. I don not gouge people. I give them a fair price.
DeleteWhen touring our buddy's new house, he mentioned the 6 x 6 wood parquet entry. My husband said, "That's not 6 x 6. More like 4 x 4." The contractor was building his own new house at the same time. They were pretty sure that's where the rest of the parquet went, and perhaps some other materials. Not saying all contractors are bad, but only that they sometimes do creative calculations.
ReplyDeleteI am so fed up. How much to ship you and Hick here for a little work vacation? We could have fun.
DeleteAh oh,....we were about to go and ask for estimates to have doors put on.... hope our estimates go better than is sounds like they will.... :-))) It sounds like we should have thought about having it done years ago when we were younger and could do the work ourselves !! I wish you luck and some Very Very good estimates soon. Lt us know how it goes... Sarah
ReplyDeleteI do the same thing. We just had our siding done yesterday. It looks amazing. We received 8 different quotes ranging from from 60K to 20K. We were also having a side door put in, a sliding door and a window. I would ask for a complete break down and several places told me it doesn't work like that. Here is the price. Guess they have so much work that they don't need me. We went with a coworkers of my Husband's Dad's company(does that make sense). They gave us a friends and family discount and broke everything down for me. They told us to buy the windows and doors since it would save us money.
ReplyDeleteWe did fire the first electrician we hired. They first day he was here he broke a water pipe. The second day he didn't want to rip open the wall so he tacked the wire to the outside of the beam. Even I know you don't do that. We told him we were not paying for that. We paid him for what he did the first day only. See why I like to have a break down of a bill. Now we have another electrician coming this week. He does work for my BIL's company. Hopefully he is better. Hubby, my son and I have been doing everything else ourselves. Off to paint the front porch today.
Okay as a self employed person that has done construction I would tell you to keep looking. INSIST on a breakdown of each item in the quote. Check on Angie's list.Prices are running around $450 for vinyl windows installed IF you don't have to custom order the size or have the frame size changed...which is why I said you want a quote with it broke down. If you have a Lowe's, Home Depot or Menards with in 30 miles, call them and ask because most of them have installers and the prices are reasonable.
