Thursday, Lots of sewing done, Thrifty Thursday

Well I managed to get into the shop and get a good pile of sewing done and start on one of the wedding dresses. Also two Jr. Miss dresses were dropped off and a woman's suit.  So I felt like it was the first good day in a long, long time.

Hubs and son in law worked hard on the new chicken run and got a great deal of work done on it.  So he is happy about that.

Hubs and I went on our weekly grocery trip and it was and eye opener. We went to 4 stores, (we live in a very small town)   Three of these stores are on the same strip and the 4th just off the strip, so you can get to then within minutes.

We bought no meat.  I did stock up on cabbage as it was .38 and I got 6 large heads.  Then onto a discount store, for radishes, mushrooms, lemons, limes, olive oil, gravy mixes 4/1, cilantro,a large jar of salsa, and some onion powder.  This store has really good prices. Then we hit Albertsons which is my favorite store for loss leaders although the most expensive store in general so I am careful what I get there. I picked up a dozen eggs free with points, then two gallons of  sugar free icecream for 1.99 limit 2. Triscuit was 1.49 a box limit 2 and I had a .75 coupon on two. They had brand x flour 10 lbs for 2.00, and pasta limit 4 for .49 cents.  That was all I bought.  Onto Winco. Hubs wanted mandarins, nuts, some dry salami all for his low carb diet. Then I bought milk, bread and some avacados and the total was $31.03 at Winco.  Hubs nuts and salami was 17.00 of this total.  We spent $73.26 total and no meat or cheese.  I raised our grocery budget by $10.00 to $60.00 a week this year and it looks like it will be $70.00 and then something.  We do try and eat many salads, but my word, food is not cheap.

This should hold us for another week and I can pull meat from the freezers.  I still have, shrimp, ground beef, chicken and pork chops. We ate the quiche I made yesterday for both of our meals.  I think I will have shrimp tacos again tonight as they were so good.

I have to alter a suit today and get a wedding dress ready for a fitting and one Jr. miss dress ready for a fitting.  It is a long dress which has to come up to the knees and I always cut them longer then let them hang and the remeasure and cut again.  When you are cutting off that much it is easy to get the dress crooked.  This makes sure that you are getting an even cut all the way around.

Thrifty Thursday:

1. saved all my $5 bills saving up to $565.00

2. saved all my spare change

3. put $1,$5,$10,$20 in a savings envelope

4. put money into one of my 100 saving envelopes I usually do two but wanted to pay on a CC.

5. Paid $300.00 to my debt for the month leaving me with just under a $1000

6. Used a coupon for a zipper at Joanns

7. shopped at a new restaurant supply store to check prices.  Picked up a few loss leaders, but doubt I will shop there much.

8. Bought loss leaders at Albertsons for the pantry

9.Made all meals from scratch out of pantry staples

10. found .8 cents this week in various places

11.downloaded receipts to fetch

12. sister brought me two larger jars of pure vanilla from Mexico. I bake a lot so this is a win.

What did you do to save money this week?  Anything unusual?

Have a great and productive day staying positive while you are in the negative.

Kim

  1. Tillamook cheese is expensive here, but I did get two packages of sliced cheese for $5.00 at Publix. I also got two cartons of little tomatoes for the price of one at Publix. I seldom shop there, only when visiting my sons. I also bought a large bag, each, of spinach, carrots, and radishes. Publix had two plastic six packs of Diet Mr Dew for $6, so I bought that. I used to be able to get it for $5 at Walmart. It has been in the 70’s to low 80’s this week. I switch from “rooty” vegetables to tomatoes, and spinach in the spring, because I do not want to heat up the house cooking. Also, I am lazy when I get home from work. I just pack my lunch sandwich and a side bag of cut up radishes and carrots. ..also diet Mt Dew. That is my basic savings I suppose. I do use the $5 off $25 coupon at Dollar General to get cat and dog food, and back up diet Mt Dew. That is the only coupon worth anything I can find around here. I walk for exercise since it is free. I am still quite chubby, so I just waddle along and try to get 30 minutes four days a week. I have insomnia, so I am posting at almost 2 am....lol.

  4. I am glad the work has picked up and am impressed with your 5 buck savings. I do the same and only have about 80 dollars for the year so far. I guess you have to spend real cash to get real returned though. 5's
Like you I am continuing to use proteins from the freezer, and have begun to see a dent in the space on the meat shelf.

    1. I am seeing progress in the meat department. We only use cash for daily expenses so that helps. But when I go to McDs'with 20 that is supposed to last the week and get three 5's back it is like ^%$#@

  5. I am so jealous of your choices!! We have 4 walmarts and an aldi's. Walmart is not carrying name brands anymore. Mom with her dementia is set on certain name brand items but now I would have to drive 100 miles one way to get them for her. Don't get me started on self checkouts, especially when I have a cart full, mom has a cart full. I go to the service desk and make them help me and they have been very kind each time. I now order my pantry (dry goods) online and have the fedex guy deliver them. That saves my back from lifting that weight in and out of the cart. I love how you plan your family dinners. I have gluten free, sugar free, no salt, low fiber and high fiber diets at my table each time. I just cook from scratch all I can. I was told yesterday by the owner of a trucking company that we will see food prices nearly double this year due to the fuel and energy costs. So I am planning on a big garden. Maybe this year I can get some apples, pears and cherries from our new trees. This brings back so many memories of my childhood. We always had fruit and vegetables because my dad planted an acre of garden and we had lots of fruit and nut trees. We ate a lot of fish from the river, lakes and ponds. We also ate racoon, possum, turtle, rabbit, squirrel, pheasant, quail, deer, etc. We were poor financially but we felt we were rich. Have a good day! jackie from the ozarks.

    1. I despise self checkouts and refuse to use them. At Wal mart you have to use a CC. I do not have a good handle on my CC use and probably never will. I can't imagine trying to scratch cook for that many diets, but I guess I would if I had to. I remember shopping with my mom and she had her opinion too.

  6. Nice work on the savings & great deal on the cabbage. I'm so hopeful that I'll be vaccinated soon, and can go back to the tiny (indoor) produce stand. They don't have social distancing, so I haven't been since COVID, but their produce prices are 30%+ less than the next cheapest option

    1. I know it adds up fast, it did last time also. I quite halfway through the year last year as all my money went to the men working on the house.
