Saturday, Death of the dryer part 1f

The dryer is on the fritz again.  We have had it repaired three times this year.  Total out of pocket about, $280.00.  It has a new heating element, all new fuses. I know the belt works.  The repairman keeps saying it is old.  Yes I know that!  But we are selling this house in the spring and I did not plan on storing the washer and dryer, but just giving them away and getting new when we decide where we are going to land.  Chances are we will be moving between our kids or with Hubs folks for a while and I do not want to pay to store a new dryer.

So I do have a few choices.  1. I can just hang our clothes to dry and go with out until we move.  2. I can take a load over to my sisters a couple of times a week.  Really if I don't do sheets and bedding we only have a couple of loads a week. 3.  I can dry things at the local laundry mat that is a few blocks away until we sell.  4. I can buy a new dryer.

Have not decided what to do yet. I guess I will give it a week and see just how aggravating it is for me. Clothing is heavier now that it is cold.  Hubs wears a t-shirt and a heavy flannel shirt everyday.  Also very heavy pants.  Still we could hang things.  I don't know.  First world problem as my daughter would say.

I have an out of town bride coming today. Also a handy man is coming to look at our list for the house.  I am excited about that.  Getting some things done around here will be good and give me something to focus on.

Well the handy man just left and he thinks we should do a lot less work than I thought as this is a 70 years old house and will have to be sold as a 70 year old house.  So that is good. Maybe?

Did more sewing yesterday than I did all week but still did not put in a full day. Not because there was not work, but because I did not want to.

The ironing board has been moved into the family room so I can go on an ironing spree then I can get clothes changed around in the closets.  Got to get something off the list dang nabit!

Found out there will be no choir practice tomorrow so I am off the hook on making scones.  They can wait until next week.

I feel like this is my last day of vacation and next week I am going to get my butt in gear and get some things done.  I have major sewing I want to do for Christmas and major cleaning and downsizing that needs to be done.  The shop is slower now and I have no excuses.  But I am sure if I work at it I can come up with some doozy excuses.

Have a great and productive day staying positive while you are in the negative.

  1. Tough call on dryer. If your sister is open to it, maybe the load r two a week mixed with line drying if you can make it work.

    1. That is what we are going to do right now. Just hang and take things to her house.

  2. Heating element and uses and belts is what goes wrong--well, 90% Tommy just told me. I would call the company and ask them. But, I expect items like dryers to never die. Since 1966, I have had two. I hope I never need another.

Wet clothes are heavier than dry ones! I just had to carry a small load of clothes from Tommy's utility room to front yard and then up his ramp and try to get them into the house. It is a pain to carry wet clothes.

Can you put up more drying space? Maybe a tension rod across a doorway? My friend strung up a clothes line across he very large kitchen and took it down when not using it. Yes, it is tacky but practical. I would not buy a new dryer!

  3. I wouldn't buy a new one either. I have had mine since 1986, knock wood. Heating element twice, and roller bar once. Hubs always replace the heat thing. If you can hang them to dry when super cold out, I would. Will add humidity to the house as well!

  4. I had the same problem with my dryer. I bought a used one to replace it for 70 dollars and used it for many years. They even delivered it. Just a thought. Your so busy I don't think you'd have time to drag laundry about. Plus hauling wet laundry is hard on your hands. Conratulations on paying off your house. That is a monumental achievement.

    1. Well I do hang my laundry right in the laundry room, heavy stuff I take out to the fence. Hubs is good about helping with this, so I won't worry about my hands.

  5. I would also consider a used dryer. I've had the same one for 30 years, never a problem. There should be some usable dryers out there that are fine, with people just upgrading their washer/dryer, and getting rid of them.

    1. I never could figure out upgrading an appliance when the old one worked. Or having to have a matching set of laundry machines.

  6. In my burb people sell their houses with the w/d so I would by a new mid range one and leave it. Might be different there.

    1. Our plan was to leave them or give them away to some young family who needed them.

  7. After reading the above comments, I would go with a used dryer. There is the risk that it may be a junker, but it would be easier to have one on site.

  8. A third option might be to buy a used dryer with a guarantee. There are sometimes used appliance places that will sell you a decent dryer for $100-200 and guarantee their work for a period of time. That way the new owner of your house can decide if they want to replace the set. I did that when selling a condo years ago. Plus in the mean time you have a good dryer.

    1. I am going to hold off and just see how aggravating line drying is.

  9. That stinks. If I had to have an appliance break and not replace it, it would be the dryer. I hang about 90% of our stuff so I don't use it much.

    1. I think I will be okay and you are right of all the major app lances this one is the easiest to figure out.

  10. I bought a used washer from a rent-to-own place and paid cash even though they wanted me to make payments. It was going to cost much more to make payments. A cheap washer would save your energy and hands.

  11. I went to freezing the clothes on the line (age 60) and then letting them thaw. It's a freeze dry thing. Mother always had 2 drying racks and did a load every day. Racks set in the bathtub during the day. Mine was in my bedroom last year and the front room this year. I also use two clip and drip clothes racks (called sock racks around here) Got mine from Amazon. I also hang shirts wet on hangers on shower rods and on the back scrub brush I rigged over the heat vent by the kitchen sink. It is propped on a can of pop on the counter and on the book shelf next to the vent.

  12. I would hang them to dry. That is what I do to keep them out of the dryer and from shrinking and wearing out quickly. I find the time doing that therapeutic.
