Tuesday, appliances break down in threes

Well our dryer died last night.  It must be the heating element.  As I am going to Spokane for a few days it will just have to be.  I will research whether it is cheaper to call a repair man or get a new dryer.  What really worries me is that appliances usually died in threes.  So what else will go down?

Right now I can hang laundry in the laundry room and it drys in a few hours.  This will be our 3rd dryer in 40 years of marriage. We did not have a dryer for the first 6 years when we were students and poor.  I have to laugh at that last sentence, by most peoples standards we are still poor. The first one we bought after I graduated from college lasted 21 years, this one 13 years.  I guess we have done well with dryers.

Will this slow me down?  No  I will just tighten up and figure how to pay for it!

Have a great and productive day staying positive while you are in the negative.

  1. Yup, that's how it works. IN 2017 first it was the dishwasher, then the stove and last, but not least, the frig. Bummer, but at least you know you can make do until you get it replaced.

  2. We have been married 40 plus years and are still on dryer number 3. I hope it lasts a few more years. Fortunately dryers are not terribly expensive.

  3. Our first dryer lasted us about 25 years. We had it repaired once and the repairman told me that starting in late 1980's/early 1990's they stopped making appliances to last that long.

  4. I replaced my dryer heating element myself. I didn't know anything about dryers, but watched a Youtube video showing how to do it. I ordered the element online, and then just jumped in, taking the dryer apart. It wasn't really that hard to do. And I saved us lots of money not having to call a repair man.

  5. When my dryer (a gas dryer) quit working (well, it still tumbled the clothes, but there was no heat to dry them), I went for about 4, maybe even 5 years, before I replaced it, at the end of December, last year. In the meantime, I just hung everything up to dry. It was a bit of a chore to do so, but I got used to it.

  6. I started off with a used electric dryer then moved into our present townhouse condo which was designed for a gas dryer. I've been using that dryer since Kazi was two, she's 28 now. I guess I've got my money's worth though I hope it doesn't conk out now that I've referred to it!!! I love you gas dryer!!

  7. I've replaced the heating element before several times. Of course the last time, the problem was something non-fixable and I had to get the guy here.
