I mean really, like I have 20 minutes to download every single comment? I thought it was my server and it turns out to be Blogger. Still can't change any of my side bars. I just don't need this in my life right now or ever! Okay I feel better now.
I hope I have some hair left after this post.
I was really interested in SAM'S post about cooking 3 dinners for $9.00. I often think about what my meals cost. I guess when you shop like I do, only buying loss leaders and hardly anything that is not on sale, you just really don't think about cost per serving.
Today I am going to run to the store as I am out of cornmeal and I want to make some cornbread to go with some chili I am making. Also need to fill a prescription.
I was trying to figure out the price of the chili. The ground beef I got on sale for $2.89 a pound and I will use 1.5 pounds. I am making enough for us for two days and for our friends for one meal. I am using canned beans as I need to use up beans I bought a few years ago. I know I paid 3/1 for these beans. I will also used home canned tomatoes, and home grown onions. SO it is hard to figure out what it will really cost me. Then spices how do you figure those? If I make corn bread how much is a cup of flour? It is too much work, just know I will do it on the cheap!
Also most recipes for chili call for more meat and less beans than I will use, as in I would reverse what they call for.
I finally got all my canned good organized in the food storage and some of the canned beans need to be used as they are outdated. Not by much but I will still try and use them up. AS you can see I have plenty of tomato products and beans. Also plenty of pasta, just hasn't organized that part of the pantry yet.
I always buy my soup at Christmas time as you can get can get cream of mushroom for under $1 a can. I saw a gentleman buying it at Albertsons the other day of $1.99 a can and on sale! Really? How can people spend like that when there is a better way? Or do they just not care?
Yesterday we went to the food bank at the end of the hours and picked up, potatoes, dried beans and canned beans, they made us take packages of chicken breasts and more frozen blueberries. Now potatoes and beans are grown here so almost anyone if you look can get them free.
Anyway I am off to run to the store, and the sale adds are crap this week. SO WILL HARDLY GET ANYTHING.
Have you ever figured out what something was going to cost per serving? Do you do it regularly?
Have a great and productive day staying positive while you are in the negative.
Kim
I noticed I couldn't leave comments when I was reading from my phone. Lately there is always something with Blogger. They are slow but surely, giving us bloggers less and less. Of course it is free but it does make me mad.
ReplyDeleteWow your food storage looks so organized.
Well I finally figured out how to maybe change the side bars, but I have a college degree in software and I don't know how the average person could figure it out, let alone below average like me:)
DeleteI am having trouble with blogger, but not the same ones you are having.
ReplyDeleteSometimes, I do figure out cost per serving, not often. Like you say, it is hard to figure sometimes. If you bought items in the past, you may not remember the exact prices.
Well I am glad I am not the only one, maybe Blogger needs to read our blogs?
DeleteI couldn't do anything but read your blog yesterday, and that took forever to download. I am so sorry that your sis has Covid. I do hope she has just a milder case.
ReplyDeleteYour canned food storage is awesome!!! Love it.
God bless.
It seems everyone was having the same problem and to think I almost changed my internet server!
DeleteI didn't care for Sam's challenge as there was nearly no nutrition. Dry beans are cheap and taste better. white bread? No thanks.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Elle. I don't even remember the last time I bought white bread. The challenge was as entertainment, for fun. Still, I think no worse than most fast food meals people will buy.
DeleteAh well, we don't do that either. I can't even think of when we last hit a drive-in. Maybe 15 years or more? Probably haven't bought a package of hot dogs in at least that long either.
DeleteI think I missed the entertainment purpose of it ;-)
My Mom taught me if you can't say something nice, better not to say anything at all...
DeleteIs your sister really going with covid to visit Slugs?
ReplyDeleteI tried to comment last night, and the comment function would not open and I tried for two hours, on and off.
When I do a hard return, it does not behave as usual--this is on my blog. Things are different on blogger.
No it is my twin sister that is going not the Lil sis who is sick.
DeleteLike others I could not comment last night and I had a really good snarly bless her heart type comment, but now I have forgotten what it was!
ReplyDeleteSometimes I figure the cost per serving but not regularly.
Dang would have loved to have heard the snark, I was in a bad mood yesterday as you well know I could have used the laugh.
Deleteyour food storage cupboard looks so good! I used to calculate the cost of meals sometimes, I plan on doing more of that once I'm not working.
ReplyDeleteWell I know in home ec we used to have to calculate cost per serving, what a pain.
DeleteI used to try and figure cost per meal - but stopped. I know it is cheap! That is good enough for me.
ReplyDeleteYour pantry storage looks nice.
I, like you, I buy cheap and stock up then.
I guess that is why I don't do it often as I know that what I have is the cheapest I could get.
DeleteLove your food storage! I try to buy on sale and figure I am doing the best I can. I am not a number cruncher at all.
ReplyDeleteI am only a number cruncher when it comes to money leaving my pocket.
DeleteI haven't been on much so don't know what issues with blogger was going on. I do know my cell phone at least once a week tells me I have no sim card. My phone co said the solar flares is causing some serious problems.
ReplyDeleteWhen I didn't grow so much of my food. I figured price per serving. Now days it's limiting what I spend per pound for meat.
I probably do it with meat more than anything and being that you are a CHef it is probably second nature to you.
DeleteYour food storage shelves look great!
ReplyDeleteAren't they wonderful! I was given this by my LIl sis's boyfriend he made it for his late wife. It is just perfect for canning jars.
DeleteI love your food shelf. It's beautiful! Hope your Lil Sis gets well soon.
