Thursday, Finished rug!

Here is the finished rug.  I really like it.  But I will tell you this is, this is not a project for the faint of heart.  It is time consuming. It only took three towels to make this rather large tub rug.  So cost wise when you are using older used towels it is not a cost issue.  But the towels must be cut in 1 inch strips, my hands got really tired and I had to stop so I did not get blisters.  Then you have to braid and sew the strips together as you go.  This step did not take too long.  The sewing of the rug was tedious.  You had to use a double carpet thread and it took several evenings to do a rug of this size.  Then it had to be hot steamed and dried.  I want to do another for the toilet but I will make it smaller. I have 6 more old towels that I  usually donate old, stained towels to the animal shelter.  I have to say this was fun and I love the results but again a LOT of work.  It just shows you how hard our ancestors worked to have a rug or a carpet in their home.
Here is Sis with her skinny butt finishing my ironing.  She needs to work. :) Sis thinks she looks square and well she is......

Mom really liked having the kids here yesterday. It was entertainment for her.  She loved rocking the baby.  So I think it was a success.  I was still able to fulfill my sewing quota.

Mom had a crying jag this morning for 2 hours.  We don't know what set her off.  I feel bad, but I said a prayer and asked for guidance in the situation as I was going to do nothing and she worked herself out of it. So I got that answer.  This is very hard.  All I can say is this is very hard.

We are trying to plan Easter dinner and mom and Sis are going out to get the fixings.   By the way the ironing is done.

Have a great and productive day staying positive while you are in the negative.

  1. I absolutely love the rug! What color towels did you use? Was one of them blue or gray and the others white? Have you ever used a rotary cutter and the mat to cut things like that? I bought one to use and hated it and took it back. Then, I bought electric scissors for cutting many layers and loved it. I would throw up such a cloud of towel, though.

Maybe not doing anything to get her to stop her crying is the best way to get her to stop? I would probably get sick if I cried that long. I'm glad you handled it the way you did.

It sounds like the visit was a great success...now onward to Easter.

    1. It was white, seafoam (very faded) and blue. These are the color of the bathroom now and I don't plane to change. It has been this color for almost 20 years. Very bathroomy...

    2. I keep the bathroom the same colors, too. Some years there is more pink/rose in there and some years more shades of blue. But, pink and blue define my bathroom and has for all my married life.

  3. I love your rug. And you are right! Sis has skinny butt so I have to hate her! (Ok not really hate her, but the metaphorical envy hatred I feel when someone takes care of their body and looks good in a candid photo of their backside)

    1. Thank you yes I out weigh my sis finally and she is loving it. I had 5 pregnancies and she had no children. So I blame it on that and maybe chocolateeeeee?

  4. The rug is gorgeous - do you hand sew it or can you do it on the machine? My guess would be it would be too thick for the machine?

    1. It is sewn by hand. That took the longest. But it was so neat to see it come together.

  6. Have you ever seen the "Amish Toothbrush" method of putting a rug together? It interweaves the strips as you go, so no sewing is needed.
Although I must say I really like the texture/pattern of your rug--is it just a simple braid? Lovely work! I would be very proud to have this in my home!

    1. I have looked at videos. This fabric made of old towels is very messy and it frays and loses fibers so using the tooth brush method would make that worse. I am going to try that with a tighter woven wool. Eventually right now it is thee 13 wedding dresses and 6 prom dresses in my shop that I need to work on.

  7. The rug is lovely. Yeah, these people that take care of themselves, keep busy, don't self medicate with chocolate and wine, I hate how easy it is for them to keep so slim. It's 7:07-too early for wine and chocolate to dull my jealousy.

    1. Well to tell you the truth she drinks coffee and then switches to wine. You can stay very slim on her diet. She also donated all her birthday chocolate to the church Easter egg hunt. $itch.

  8. I imagine your mother was weeping for all the things and people that are past, and will never be again. Sometimes it hits us oldsters all at once.

    1. I found out later she couldn't see the buttons on her large cell phone. One more thing she cannot do. I feel so bad for her, it doesn't seem fair.

  9. Pretty rug! Sis looks great... wish I was that square! :-)) Sorry about mom's crying spell. Does she have 'nerve' medicine for times like that? I'm glad she enjoyed the babies.
