Wednesday, Crap adds!

This is not my stockpile.  Mine would never be that organized.  But boy am I grateful for the one I do have.

It was hot yesterday and I chopped up fruit from the food bank and made a hot dish with canned beans and burger. We will have enough for this evening's meal.

Our grocery adds were above disappointment.  Chicken breast on sale for $4.99 a pound!  Wow what a bargain. Not....

It is so nice to be able to make almost anything and just have what I need right here. Now I did notice that I am out of canned red kidney beans, I do have them dry but not canned.  So, this is one thing I will look for when I find a sale. I just used two cans of another bean for my hotdish.  We are also almost out of pork n beans, so again these almost always go on sale at the end of the summer and I will stock up again.

Having a stockpile, gives me security and allows me to ignore the high prices we are experiencing right now. I just plan my meals around what I have on hand.  Also doing a no spend grocery challenge saves me money and allows me to rotate the things I do have.

It is no use to buy say a flat of canned kidney beans and then never use them. I am all for emergency food storage, but you have to store the things you will eat and rotate the things you will eat. Letting things go stale or bad in the freezer does not help lower the bottom line.

Right now, I can get a bottle (limit 1) of tabasco sauce for $1.  I will go buy that.  Also, an 8 pack of Gatorade for $5.46 (limit 2) I will also buy this. We keep this on hand for our grandkids and the missionaries who stop buy often.  They have been in the hot sun and need a cool pit stop. That's it for the week. Unless I get a wild hair and need something else.  But I will try and work around that need.

I was talking to the people at the foodbank, and they told me the more names they have of people using the bank the more food they can get. Late in the day right before closing, I was given, pears, apples, nectarines, grapes, red peppers, plums, red cabbage, burger, dates, prunes, cheese, potatoes.  All things that would not hold. I got two bags of frozen peas, and ziti pasta, that I use.  This also allows me to make food for others on a regular basis. I took 3.5 dozen eggs to the pantry to add to their stock and they were snatched right away!   I was glad to contribute.

I finished a wedding dress yesterday and the bride will be in later today for me to cut the top layers.  I am going to finish another wedding dress today and a bridesmaid dress.  I also need to start on another wedding dress.  I am trying to get all the August dresses out, and I am almost there.

Well back to the grind.  How many of you have a food storage that you used regularly?

Have a great and productive day staying positive while you are in the negative.

Kim

  1. I stopped in my town and found nothing at the one store I usually find marked down things in the aisles and not advertised or in a couple of buggies in the back of the store. Nada. I did get a can of Argo peaches, the large can, for $1.99. I got one. Then, I found Betty Crocker fudge brownie mixes in a pouch for $1.19. Several months ago, these were $1.10 and last year $0.99. The pouch only makes a few brownies, probably more expensive than in a box. But, we only need a few. Don't suggest something foolish like freezing them...lol...I like frozen brownies.

There is that much food storage in my house, not the same things, and not all in one place or organized. I still have free meat in my freezer.

Today was a free lunch and dinner and food won as door prizes! More on my blog.

  2. I'm in this mindset again too. Starting tomorrow! We have some life changes again in coming months, but needless to say, we're battling inflation too. I too see little deals, but if decent price I'm picking up spares.

    1. That is how it is here. Although gas is going down will we see it reflected in our prices?

  3. Love your post. You know I have food storage. It is so nice to just 'shop" from home. Run out of something - substitute something else.
How wonderful you got so many great items from the food bank. Nice that you donated eggs.

    1. Well, it is the one place where I can control how much I spend. I cannot control gas, other than not driving.

  4. I’ve volunteered at our pantry and know first hand how they have to get rid of perishables because they won’t keep til the next give-away. We also pick up food from Feeding America for two families who can’t go themselves. Sometimes they’ll share if they get too much or have something they won’t eat. You’re a blessing to many!

    1. Thanks Debbie, I just can't stand to see good food go to waste.

  5. Sales are terrible. Makes me happy that I actually have a well stocked pantry. Though I do have to restock some pasta and frozen veggies. I am hoping for a sale on those really soon.

    God bless.

  6. We always have a stockpile on regularly used items. I like to have a minimum of 6 months of necessities. That is how I grew up and I've just always done it this way.

    1. It is a smart way to be. My grocery bill is 1/4 what many of my friend's bills are, but I have just always done this and so did my mom and grandma.
