Sunday, We got our baby chicks!

Yeah we got our chicks! Twelve of them.  As we are actually making a chicken run on this property we are able to get more chickens.  They are so cute and right now they are in a large cage in the garage with a heat lamp so they can stay warm.  They will stay in that coup until they develop pin feathers.  They should start laying in July or August. They grow very fast.

Schmills will be so excited when he comes down.  He loves to play with the new baby chicks.  If we handle them as they are growing they are much tamer and will come when I call and allow me to pick them up and catch them when I need to.

Kelsa slept with us last night as her mom had to teach makeup classes this morning, and after her mom picked her up we went and got our chicks.  Hubs had to work at the school this afternoon into evening.  I just pulled the last frozen pizza we bought from a school fundraiser, for an easy late lunch/dinner. Also had a salad we made yesterday.

I will title this picture, "What the Hell?" The  reaction of the dog and cat when I put the box of baby chicks on the counter in the kitchen.  We have not had chickens for about 3 months now and they were not enthused. Especially the cat as her litter box and food are in the garage and she now has to share her room. Roscoe does not like to share attention with anyone or anything.  Baby chicks are in the thing category for him. For our cat Shim they are toys we won't let her play with. I beleive total disgust is their attitude.

I forgot to mention I finally completed my second chart on Friday and I am onto my 3rd.  It is slow going, as money is very tight and my business was very slow for the last year.  Scary, but I will persevere, because that is what I do.

After hubs left for the school I took a long nap and it was so nice.

We will have church online today and I have pulled out chicken legs for dinner, along with a salad, asparagus, and potatoes. I will probably make a batch of popovers, as Hubs and I are trying to only eat breads on the weekends.  Or we are really limiting our refined carbs.  Not fun but necessary.

I hope the weather is good today as I would really like to take a long walk.

Do any of the rest of you raise chickens?  Have a you ever wanted to?  Did you do it as a kid?

Have a peaceful and restful Sabbath.

Kim

  1. Do you mean you eat no bread during the week? Or, do you limit yourselves to eating only bread on the weekend?

Yes, I had chicks 2009-2018. I loved it. I held and talked to my chicks. The one I rescued from being pecked to death would sit by me in the swing and relax and lean on me. She followed me around and talked to me.

For coming to me, I had a food call that was used from day1...Deee li lah, in a high voice. They came from anywhere when I said that. I think using it for every feeding helped them to fully associate it with food.

I am quite sure the cat thinks you keep all the fun toys for yourself.

The best thing for having compliant, calm hens was getting rid of the two roosters as soon as I figured out they were roosters and troublemakers.

    1. We try not to eat bread Monday through Friday. We cannot have roosters in the city limits, if we get one by accident (and we have) we give it away to a farm.

  2. Congrats on getting the baby chicks. I hope they grow and lay a lot of eggs for you. We loved it when we had chicks.

Congrats also on completing your second saving chart, That is great!

  3. No interest in keeping chicks, but would like to buy local eggs. I am leery of your cats! Good job in the chart-even in these strange times you are achieving your goals. Glad you got baby time.

    1. I can certainly understand not wanting chickens. There is a reason they are called fowl.(foul)

  4. We never had chicks growing up as we lived in the inner city. Now we are in a small city but still within city limits not allowed. We have friends that raise chicks on their horse farm so we have a supply of eggs.
You are doing well with your goals and charts! Slow and steady wins the race. Hope you have a great Sunday!

  5. We used to have chickens but we live in an area where I can get backyard eggs from so many people and places I decided to stop.

    1. Well it does not make economic sense to keep chickens, I just love them.

  6. Momma and my grandma (she lived with us and took care of me while momma worked) certainly raised chickens when we lived on the family farm. Momma bought a little brick house in town to be close to the hospital where she worked and we could no longer have chickens in the city limits. She also told me she was not dealing with chicken S@#$ while babysitting my kids for free after she retired so uhm......no chickens....lol. Gotta keep a free babysitter happy! Momma ruled the roost!!!!

  7. I wish I could have had mine as chicks, but we didn't get the coop done in time, so they were older when I finally got them from my friend.

    1. Eventually you will have to replace them and then you will get chicks.

  8. The chickens are a big huge no for me. I don't want to be bothered with tending to them, at least not here at this house. I would only have them if I could let them be free range (at least during the daytime) and only my backyard is fenced. I just don't want to be dodging chicken poo each time I step outside. They are cute as long as they live somewhere else.

    1. You are right there sister. They are messy and poop a lot. That is why they are in a coop and a run.

  9. I don't eat bread. Not at all. It is tough but I've been doing it that way for about ten years.
Oh, and I have alektorophobia. I'm deathly afraid of chickens!

  10. My mother grew up on a farm and they raised chickens and turkeys. That's what they survived on thru the depression. She hated them with a passion. No chickens for us! And she rarely would even cook chicken, or turkey. Celie

    1. Isn't that funny? People who were raised on chickens hate them and I can understand that. I have never bought a box of hamburger helper and will not allow boxed macaroni and cheese in my house.

  11. The expressions on the cat & dogs faces are just priceless Kim. They certainly are NOT impressed with the new additions to the family.

  12. Baby chicks are so cute. You are right the dog and cat look just disgusted with the whole thing.

I hope business picks up for you very soon.

    God bless.

  13. I would have them if we lived in an area that allowed it. We're a little too "suburban" vs rural for chickens, and don't have a great space. Our yard is mostly the pool, and I'm thinking chickens + pool don't mix well. ;-)

    1. You are right there. Chickens are very dirty. You have to keep them clean and we put their mess in compost.
