Thursday, dang deer!, Thrifty Thursday

When I was making Hub's salad last night I used the last head of lettuce and was telling myself that I was not going to need to buy anymore as I had at least 10 heads of romaine that were ready to pick for future salads.  Well that was before the deer got to is last night, they did not leave much.

I am telling you this move has been really hard on our gardening skills, or maybe it has made us learn new ones. Like I will not plant petunias anymore.  I love wave petunias but so do the deer and they chop off every blossom they come to.

So the scare crow seems to be doing his job in the garden, although when I am out watering I see him out of the corner of my eye and I think it is hubs as he is in hubs old clothes.  But we have no lights or scarecrow by the back deck so the deer have a salad bar.

Hubs is almost done with the second layer of snake fence, so Roscoe will not be able to get out of the back area to the snakes.  Hubs has plugged all holes in the lower fence. He now will have to build a style as we cannot climb over anymore and there are times when we will have to get over.  Like when a mother cow has a baby that escapes, which seems to happen with frequency. She stands there mooing as loudly as she can, and the calf just calmly chews on the longer grass with gusto.

I have major sewing to get done today. I cannot believe the volume of work I have.  I am so blessed.  I was able to figure out what I want to get done in the next 10 days and it is a lot with more coming in by the hour. The Native American store called and wants as many skirts as she can get by July.  Yeah I am just laughing about it right now....

Thrifty Thursday:

1. saved all my change

2. saved $1,$5,$10,$20 bill now have 22 weeks so $792

3. saved all $5 bills now have $1125.00

4. saved money in my 100 envelope challenge now have $2,182.00

5. Cooked all meals at home with company except for one where we went out.

6. used up many things from the freezer while company was here to make large meals

7. used coupons at Joanns for product.

8. used stock I had in the shop rather than buying things to repair items and then charged client

9. bought many items on sale as loss leaders before the kids came to save money

10. Recovered thrifted pillows for back deck and yard chairs.

11. downloaded receipts to fetch

Hubs wants me to take all the money I have saved to the bank.  He does not feel safe with this much cash in the house.  I want to wait until the end of the year, but I am already well over $4,000.  What do you think?  Bank? or just keep saving here?

Have a great and productive day staying positive while you are in the negative.

  1. I'd bring your cash to the bank, so the risk is minimal. You had a great thrifty week, and awesome news that you have so much work right now!

  2. Please take that cash to the bank!!! That is too much to have at home, in my opinion!

  3. Glad you have a lot of work (too much maybe?) coming in. I would get on board with you taking the money to the bank but first I would have to admit I keep too much cash in the house sometimes too.
    Preaching to the Choir maybe?

    1. Well I think it is wise to have a little, if banks shut down or a crisis and cards don't work, cash will be king.

  4. I have had to spray my petunias and shrubs with deer repellent spray. Seems to be working so far. Keeping my fingers crossed.

    1. I just plan on not planting anything deer like in the flower pots. I am learning this year.

  5. You could open a separate bank account just for those savings. If you already have $4k you will have quite a nest egg by year end. I would keep $500-$1000 at home for emergency.

    1. I did put it in a separate account and I do want to keep some cash at home, as I think it is wise.

  6. A guy kept posting how much ammo and survival equipment he had and how he secured it and when he was going out of town. One of these times, someone came and cleaned him out. They knew what he had and where it was.

Snakes can climb. One climbed into my basement where a window was down about a half inch. You can also install a snake gate. I would hate to see one of you fall off yet have a snake stile they can get across.

    1. Well I am no longer keeping it at home, it was kind of silly. I never though about the snakes climbing the style.

  7. By a small safe, put the cash in the safe at home. I would strongly recommend having cash in case the blanks are closed or something happens where you cannot get access to your cash. But put it in a safe so thieves don’t just walk off with it!

  8. Take it to the bank. You've now posted it online and your blog could easily lead a thief to your home.

    1. Oh Elle you are so right, it is all at the bank, with just a small amount of cash here to make change. I was stupid to keep that much money in the house. I will now make weekly deposits.

  9. I would put it in a special account in the bank. That is a great deal of cash to have in the house.

Sorry the deer got your lettuce.

    God bless.

    1. I did and I feel good about it. I know I was so mad, but then we had to laugh about it because what else can you do?

  10. Definately take the cash to the bank Kim - that's too much to have in the house. You could keep some cash in the house but not that amount. So pleased you have so much work coming in right now.

  11. Ugh, sorry about the deer. I feel your pain though as I have deer and ground hogs, raccoons too, so I can't grow corn. Glad your scarecrow helps though.
I agree with the others, put the money in a bank account so you will earn a little interestj anyway too. Congrats on the savings!

  12. Sorry about the deer. Thankfully our yard is fenced in or we would have the same problem. We have a fireproof portable safe to keep cash in at home. Have a great Friday.
