Saturday, Flippen' for profit

Well, I was inspired by my lamp flip, that I went to Goodwill and bought this larger mirror, for $5.50 and I took it home and chalk painted it, with paint from another project and then after two coats I distressed it and put it on my towns selling page.  I asked $45.00 and it sold immediately.  I know I did not spend even an hour painting this, even with all the curves and detail.

I am now working on a pouting stool, and I will take pictures of it when I am done.  Heck, this keeps me busy, and I enjoy being creative.  Plus, I love perusing secondhand stores.  But I am being very selective. One thing at a time.  I will not waste money filling my garage with crap I don't need.  Plus, I don't have the extra resources right now.

Went to bed early last night and the kids were here when I woke up. Daughter had to go to doctor as she has a bad sinus infection, which I suspected.  We will have Kelsa tonight.

I did get a couple of rooms deep cleaned and I am going to finish the rest after Kelsa wakes from her nap.

I need to run to the bank and cash a check and then I will continue to work on my project, and I also want to make scones today.  Something yummy as we eat the rest of the bean soup.

Tomorrow I will roast a chicken.  It's all about using what is in the freezer. Trying to be very frugal here and use what we have on hand.

I have two beds to makes and vacuuming to finish and then I am going to mop all the floors. The snow and the dog have really done them in, plus daughter brought her dogs down to be groomed. I am so glad I waited to do the floors.  I would have made her redo them, but she is too sick right now.

So, do you think I am nuts trying this flip idea? Is it something you would do to earn a little side money?

Have a great and productive day staying positive while you are in the negative.

Kim

  1. I say if you're getting joy from both the search for items, and the upcycle, for it. It feels like something for just you or something fun with your girls. Careful though, you'll give me ideas I'll try and fail at!

    1. Well, it does give me something to do and I and having so much fun, but I have not had one bite on my third item, I am sure it is too selective.

  2. Love your first 2 flips, Kim! Way to go! Easiest money you can make! You are right about being very selective & only buying one thing at a time - and only things you are pretty sure will sell. I've sold on Ebay for many years (mostly clothing) and have made a fortune. The really good days were before 2008 crash. After, still OK, but not quite as good. But I still flip things occasionally. I will also list things on FB Marketplace & Craigslist once in awhile. It's always been amazing to me the treasures I can find in scouring the thrift stores. Just popping in whenever - sometimes leaving with nothing. Anxious to see what your future flips entail!

    1. It is so much fun, and I love perusing the shops. I don't want to do ebay as I don't want to be involved with paypal where they can track your earnings. That is such a pain. The tax thing gets me and already pay enough in taxes with the shop.

  3. I would buy bread machines, clean them if they needed it, but definitely wash it. Then, I would bake a loaf of bread. I put a price on it $10 more than I paid. Then, I would list them in the free ad section of our paper. They all sold in less than three days. The only time I ever had two to sell, I priced them $13 and $14. The guy came and bought both. When the transaction was done, he said he was curious--why was one $13 and another $14? I smiled, shrugged my shoulders and told the prices seemed about right. I also bought sewing machines to sell.

  5. I would have bought that mirror in ten seconds flat and yes! I think you should keep doing it.. Why not?.... I;ve had a busy couple of days here as well, took down all the Christmas decor and tree and then putting all my regular decor back, I always end up moving things around etc.. Finally got everything almost in it's place this morning and then I had to do my usual cleaning, run to the store for some groceries, hubby isn't feeling too well since the other day so I had one home test kit for Covid left and he took it this morning, was negative so may just be some virus or the flu so tomorrow morning I am going to put on a big pot of home made chicken soup and I bought some apples. Want to bake him something, maybe an Apple Cake?...

  6. I would not flip because I don't enjoy it. If you enjoy the creativity of it and have the time, why not? You have financial goals in front of you so make hay now and perhaps you can retire a bit earlier than planned??????

  9. Good job on the flipping. It's not something I would do, but I really admire those who do. It seems to be a good side hustle, that can grow into something bigger. My hat's off to women who earn the living as well as keeping house and raising a family!

    1. I just had a long talk with our oldest who is an attorney and she asked why I just didn't get a job when things were so bad when I was raising the kids. I had two college degrees, but so much pressure was just put on me by my husband's family who are LDS, I am a convert. I was expected and stay home. I did a lot of side hustle jobs and I brought in a good living, but it was very stressful and never really enough just above the poverty level. SO all the girls are really well educated, and all have great jobs. I think more women work now, but where we live you have to be married to a doctor or a dentist to have a church job. Money counts. Isn't that sad?

  13. Your upcycling and reselling could be a good thing for you. As others have said as long as it brings you joy go for it.

    God bless.

  14. I don't think you are nuts, but it isn't something I would do. I'm lazy and not at all crafty.

  15. We have been flipping furniture pieces for about, 7 years. Mostly dressers, bureaus, bookcases, side tables. And then odds and ends picked up cheaply from yard sales. It makes a nice side income as my husband is retired. We only do solid wood furniture for furniture pieces. If you can do it, I would say go for it. This week we sold a multi drawer kitchen cart for 80 dollars that we spent 22 dollars on. Sold a bike left out in someone's trash with a broken chain. Brought it home, new chain, washed and shined it, 60 dollar profit. Keep in mind some weeks are better than others.
