Monday, handling setbacks

Sometimes when one is trying so hard to pay off debt and make financial plans, we have setbacks.  Now I am not talking about the current state of our economy, that really has not hit yet for most of us.  I am talking about unexpected large bills or large than planned for bills.

I have very little in savings right now due to unexpected bills and also trying to meet savings goals for particular things. Let's just say after these goals have been met Kim is going to have a much larger emergency fund.

Roscoe's bill was $627.00, so the emergency fund took a hit.  As I am a widow and this is the first year of actually living correctly on my SSI and Joel's pension, I owe $469.99 in Federal taxes.  Only in America can your income go down by over a 1/4 and you can still have your taxes go up.  The world is not kind to widows. On top of that the accountant was $420.00 I was expecting about $300. Her fees have gone up significantly and I may not use her next year. So, I in just a couple of weeks have had $1,516.00 worth of oops's to my financial life.  This on top of meds and gad going up significantly.  What am I going to do?

Throw in the towel? Believe me parts of me wants to.  Then again, I think of the two goals I have already achieved this year, and I realize I can do this, after all no one is going to do it for me. I have been able to save for a $5670.00 goal and pay off another 9247.00 goal and it was before the 1st of April!  Now will this put me behind on my yearly plan. Why yes, she says. But will I let it completely derail me? NO!  Why?  Because there is no rescue party, and I will find ways to make it up.

Right now, I am scrambling to find cash on hand to pay the accountant. I have $335.00 of the $420.00. Hopefully in the next couple days I will have enough product picked up to earn the remaining money.  That is my plan.  I have already incorporated the $627.00 into my budget by not putting more money into a savings plan that I cannot touch. Now the money I owe the Feds $469.00. I am just going to have to write the check and pray that before the 15th of April those funds will be here. I have 8 days. I am pretty sure I can do this. The $1000.00 emergency fund is not enough.  I will not go into funds that are invested, and no not in the stock market.

Kim is going to have a $5000 emergency fund by the end of the year. This is scary!!!!!

I don't like setbacks, life is hard, I work hard.  But I am blessed to have a good life and skills that make my life easier.

I have goals for the week.

1. No eating out except when I am going to the Temple

2. buying no groceries unless it is such a good loss leader it cannot be passed up.

3. Working hard in the shop to make money to pay said bills.

4. Being grateful for what I do have

It would be so easy to just sit in a puddle and scream and cry but is that going to solve my problem?  No not really.  I might feel a little better for a short time but even that.... Not really.

So here I am off the hem a dress and complete 4 bags of piles and I know I have at least 2 more clients coming in with bags!

I can do this.  Drum roll please, or at least some applause would be nice.  A little louder please?

Have a great and productive day!

God is good!

Kim

  1. So sorry for the blips in the budget. G and I used to always have to pay taxes. I have gotten federal back every year that I have been on SSI and pension. This year was a really good year. That is too much to pay to have them done. I'd start looking for next year.
I agree 5,000 is a good amount for an emergency account if possible. I try to keep that or more. You just never know.
I am sorry things are tough right now - they do get better. Be strong.

  3. Sending positive thoughts your way. In order to not pay in, I slashed my take home pay by drastically increasing my withholding last March after what I thought was going to be a big return had me paying in! It was tough this past year, but I adjusted. You got this... You're in your busy season and you have resources to avoid spending elsewhere like your freezer and pantry. Tea h me my friend as I'm going to need it.

  4. You can definitely do this Kim. Life is hard, there are ups and downs, but never, ever, give up.

    God bless.

  6. Hi Kim, that’s a lot of expenses to hit at once and I’m so sorry.
But girl, I started reading your blog when you first started and you had such a hole to climb out of, I didn’t see how you could. But you have been very successful and just done so good !
I know it will be hard but you’ll get through this

We are hoping to up our emergency savings too, out of necessity. If we need a big house repair, $5000 or even $10000 wouldn’t be enough.

    1. That is what scares me. A huge house repair. Right now it is the yard and the sheds so exspensive.

  7. Hi. I've been in a few pickles similar to yours. I found that if I sell something, the sale can help. I was once down to my last $20 but I had a quick yard sale and by the end of the day, I had $600! I am certain you have things you can sell. Now is a great time to sell any gold jewelry you might not wear or want anymore. Gold is at an all time high! I sold a few pieces during my lifetime. Things like gifts from old boyfriends (yes! I kept them. lol) or even a half an earring or a broken gold watch. Yup, I've sold stuff like that too. Any jeweler will buy it off you. Do you have any dresses or gowns you can place at a consignment shop? I hope I haven't sounded disrespectful. I only wish you much success.

    1. Thank you Cindy, I too have done all of those things. I have really gone through and tried to sell things as much as possible, but I might have to lower some prices.

  8. You can do hard things, Kim. You show us that every day. 💕 $5,000 in an emergency goal is a terrific goal. I think I’ll join you in that challenge.

    1. Great. let's say the first one to get there owes the other a gifty ( something small and funny) Then we can brag to the others that we have won.

  9. You've got this Kim!!
I would find a new accountant. Ours charged us 260.00, yours is charging too much. Are you making sure to write off everything you can for your sewing business? It makes a big difference. Your phone, partial power, equipment, etc should all be deductible.
    Big hugs!

    1. Oh yes, I don't know why it is so high, but I will definitely be looking for someone less expensive.

  10. That accountant fee is very reasonable for Idaho, IMO (mine was $750). It is common for widows to get an audit so walk with caution. (my sister widowed at just 57y and got hit with an audit year one amidst the depth of grief. Yes, the tax structure has no respect for a widow. You are single in the eyes of the government therefore "get" to do twice as much while paying for it!

Hang in there-as we know you will! Hugs.

  13. I hesitate to recommend anything that adds work to your plate, but if you are in a real bind & want to make $5/day or something doing mindless stuff, I really like Prolific. It's typically academic surveys from colleges & the like. I've made about $400 or so in 2025, and do it just while drinking coffee in the morning & my brain is waking up. Anyway, it's not a big money earner, but is just a little bit to add to the coffers. - Hawaii Planner
