Tuesday, Frustrated, Kim will get something done!!!!

I am determined to get something done today. The shop was very busy yesterday, with lots of people in and out, and many phone calls, but not much work getting done.

I did not get any bills paid and I am determined to do that right after this blog post.

I did get my soup over to Lil sis's, and mom and I went and picked up a few groceries we needed.  Again, I was shocked by prices going up even higher, although gas is down under 4.30 a gallon here so that is good.

There is enough soup left for today's meals and we had leftover pancakes for breakfast. I ran to the store earlier to get a book of stamps, and if you hit Albertson's early in the day Tuesday before the sale papers go out on Wednesday you can usually find very good meat sales. I hit pay dirt and found $86.00 worth of beef.  The fact that I spent less than $100 last month with my grocery challenge, allowed me to not feel the least bit guilty buying steaks, roasts, short ribs at rock bottom prices.  These are all wrapped and in the freezer.

I observed a woman buying $277.00 worth of groceries and I was shocked.  She did have 4 children.  But I have never had that kind of money. I just don't understand where people get the money they have.  Am I just delusional? Or did I miss something?  Are you ever shocked by how much some people spend on groceries? Trying not to be judgmental but I just feel sorry for people.

Okay, Kim has got to get it together and today is the day!

1. pay all bills

2. take bills to mail that need mailed

3. get red shirt done

4. get burgundy pants done

5. hem two pairs of jeans

6. hem a pair of dress pants

7. hem a pair of dress pants

8.hem a pair of jeans

9. hem dress blues

10.hem 3 pair of police pants, one dress pair, two utility

11. hem bridesmaid dress

12. hem bridesmaid dress

13. pull wedding dresses by date

We are having left overs for dinner so no cooking here, I have no excuse not to get this work done.

Now to do it!

Have a great and productive day staying positive while you are in the negative.

Kim

  1. What a deal on the meat - good for you. I think some people can spend it, because it wasn't earned by them - others might be in debt up to their eyeballs, and yet others really do make some good money. I was never one of those lucky ones, to make a ton of money. Hope everyone is on the mend!

    1. Well many others pointed out that this might be a months worth for them and I had never thought of that.

  2. I have noticed around here that lots of folks, when they get their checks on the first and third of the month, stock up for the entire month. I have noticed far less folks with large amounts of food in their buggy towards the end of the month. Lots of folks are just picking up an item or two at the end of the month in the grocery store. 1. I think food stamps come out in the first of the month also and I have noticed the buggy’s loaded with lots of meat, cheese, milk, fresh fruit and vegetables, greens are popular here such as turnip greens, mustard greens. And collards and also large bags of frozen vegetables. I assume folks are eating the fresh items at the first of the month and switching to the frozen items at the end of the month. That makes sense to me. I have an autistic son who will not eat pork nor chicken so I am usually limited to all beef and catfish, with an occasional frozen shrimp. He hates salmon. So I usually cook the same things every weekend when I am with him. Cindy in the South

    3. You know I never thought of that as I have never shopped by the month but that makes perfect sense. My sister has an autistic daughter, and she is also picky. I know that food stamps come out on the first and you see people loading their carts and that is okay.

  3. $86.00/2=$43.00. 43.00 multiplied by 5 = 215.00. Add a husband to make 6 and you are both spending nearly the same amount. Could this have been her shopping for a month? That would be very good. Please check my math . Not my strongest point.

    1. You know you are right, I just don't think about shopping for the month. I need to be less judgmental.

    1. I usually have one large shop a month, then smaller. $277 for a family of 6 doesn't seem high to me if a stock up, and if they had non-food items too. I spent over $225 a few weeks back but had dog food, tp, paper towels too. It doesn't take long. I don't have time or interest in going to multiple stores so likely spending more on similar items than others. Anonymous math is accurate. I would guess if you asked your daughters what they spend you'd be shocked. You're a master at the grocery game. I'm sorry your day was frustrating.

    2. You are all so right and yes, I do get frustrated with how my daughter's shop. They were raised better:)!!!! I have never shopped for a month and would never buy dog food or paper products at a grocery store, so what they spent was actually pretty low.

  5. I am so glad to have leftovers tonight! I saw a woman buy $300.70 worth of food and she barely had anything in the buggy. Horrifying! I noticed what she bought, but it was not anything much out of line. I wondered if she were buying for a family for the month. Since I was so involved with my order, I forgot what she had.

That was a great deal on the meat!

Although I don't get food stamps, they come in on different days of the month in this state, according to ss# or last name, so not on even one of two days. This is in the same state as Cindy of the South.

    1. PP: I just asked the food stamp supervisor in my county (my neighbor) and she said it is based on the last digits of case number and the case number depends on date when person comes in to sign up for food stamps. At least that is how they do it in this county. I am now wondering why the grocery stores are so crowded in the small counties down here on the first and third and why the lines at the local bank are so bad on those two days? I don’t know? I know my retirement check comes in on the last day of the month and that my part time paychecks, like it did when I was full time, arrive on the first and the 16th, but that still doesn’t explain the awful bank lines on the first and the third of every month, the lines literally wrap around the building, and the grocery stores being so crowded then? I am wondering why now? I don’t have a clue! Cindy in the South

    2. I think a lot of older folks get their social security checks on the 3rd of the month Both of my parents did. Eventually the Social Security Administration changed newer recipients to a system of more spread out dates depending on where birth date falls in the month.

    3. Anonymous, oh ok. Thst does make sense. I forgot my momma’s check came in on the third also and several of her friends are still alive so they would still be receiving their social security check on the third. Thank you for clearing that up.
I was so confused…. lol. Cindy in the South

    4. If you receive a Supplemental SS check, you still get it on the 1st of the month. I live near a community that has about 80% receiving some kind of government check. Why? Old age, disability and basically if you could you left and if you couldn't you live in poverty.

    5. Hubs SSI comes in on the 3rd. YEs the grocers are busier on the 1st because of food stamps, I tried to get apple juice yesterday and it was sold out due to WIC. WHIch is a great program.

  6. I would assume a total that high was a monthly grocery shop that would be added to as needed later in the month. Back when TheHub was self employed, when clients paid him(finally) we had to take care of first things first, which meant house payments and food were first before anything. If he had a large check I went shopping for a month. I probably did not spend 215 but that was over 35 years ago so in that day's dollar I am sure it would have equalled more.

    1. You know Anne I never thought of buying for the month, as I have never done that. It was always weekly or every two weeks for me.

  8. I spend more than that for 1 month for 2 of us. Our CSA alone is $100/month.
Organic meat, organic chicken, organic fruit/veg. Farmer's market or CSA or Farmer's gathering here called Reko. If she is feeding a family of 6 for less than $300 she is my hero!

  9. A 2 wage earned household can reasonably bring home $3000/month. 10.3% of income on food was average in 2021.

  10. I'm a retired (reluctantly) senior, part of the SSI group that receives payments on various dates throughout the month.

Most of our major grocery stores have a senior discount day (10%, some items excluded) on the first Wednesday of the month. Also, it usually is the worst ad of the month! Some months it is my primary shopping day, usually for things I use that rarely are on sale; other months shopping is spread a bit more when there are good sales.

In the past few years, buying bath and facial tissue and paper towels on sale at the grocery store is as economical as most discount stores. Membership stores don't work well for me. I can't save enough to make the membership fee pay for itself, and they are too big for me to navigate without pain! Used to love them with a larger household. And a pain-free spine! :-)
