Thursday, garden planted

It was over 80 yesterday although no real sunshine so a little muggy, but I loved the heat.  We had vicious  thunder and lightening storms late in the day and into the evening.  They were amazing.  Today it is rainy and about 20 degrees cooler and will stay this way for a while.

I can't believe that tomorrow is May 1st.  When this first started my days rolled into each other.  Then is became my weeks and I am afraid it will be my months.  I have all my bills stacked to pay and I keep thinking, Why am I paying all these I didn't do anything to warrant the month.  I know that is silly, but it is a weird feeling.

The garden is planted as far as I can go right now and I will wait for a few other things.

I will cook a big ham today that I got free at Easter and I am going to clean out the freezers and go through the home canned tomatoes ad make a big pot of spaghetti sauce.  I have several large bags of frozen tomatoes and cans from years ago that need to be used. AI also have green peppers in the freezer from last year and corn.  So I will do an inventory and see what needs to be used up, before the garden starts producing.

I am getting calls for masks, and now I am wondering if I should charge to make them.  Not much just enough to cover my time and materials.  I am  waiting for elastic to come.  I feel like I should be just giving these away, but when people call and ask me to make them ....  Thoughts?

Have a great and productive day staying positive while you are in the negative.

  1. WOW - how neat that most of the garden is in. That ham will make so many wonderful and tasty meals. Using what we have - love it!
I think you can charge for the masks - they are asking for them. It doesn't have to be a lot. I know someone who is charging $2 each just to cover the elastic as they are using remnants from their material stash. People asking should be willing to pay something for them.

  2. I think you should charge for the masks, too. People need to realize that your time is valuable.

  3. Sewing is your living. Charge something! You have a skill that many people do not possess. You have given away some, so charge a little from now on. Of course, there is always bartering. Do you need new plants, someone to weed, anything? Offer people the chance to barter if you want. People may have their own thoughts as to what they will offer.

  4. I'd probably balance the cost, by charging for those who are not essential works, and perhaps donating (at your cost) for those who are? Or, I also like the idea of bartering!

    1. I don't mind donating it is just that some people come back and want 6 more and then 4 more and it is time consuming.

  6. Make people pay for the people that can. Then sew some for those that can't, not those that call you but those you know could use them through your church?

  7. You could also make them pay what you can. I've gotten masks from two people: one was asking for donations to the food bank and the other asked people to pay what they could, and to take for free if you couldn't afford it.

  8. you sure have been busy in the garden! I think charge for the masks, you sew for a living and there are costs involved, and you could still donate some as you want to those that can't afford to pay, the payers help subsidise the donations. There was a story in our local paper a few weeks ago of a lady charging $25 AU for 3 masks, apparently she's doing a roaring trade.

    1. Well I don't want to take advantage of those who are struggling at this time, but I have also had people take advantage of my ability to make masks.

  9. My mom was a seamstress. She always felt if she was offering her services it was free, but if they came to her she would charge. I think you should see it that way too. They mask cost you money.

  10. as soon as boomers die off in mass, we millennials will vote for socialism. Within the next 5 to 10 years, as more and more of you boomers die off, we are going to turn America into a socialist country, and we are going to STOP giving 80 billion a year to Israel. Everything you boomers worked to create, we will destroy.

  11. Free will payment might be an option too. I'd gladly pay beyond time and cost to help a sewer who has been making for others.

    1. I agree with this, I have certainly made many and donated them, but now it looks like a business.

  12. Here in Ohio I have several friends making masks... average is $5 unless they are medical and then it's $2 to cover the costs of making it.

  13. I don't imagine the people asking are expecting to get a free mask, so yes charge and donate if you wish to.
