Tuesday, Windy day, but results

I  was able to help till the garden yesterday.  I have never operated a tiller before.  My grandmother always told us girls to never learn to use tools or heavy farm equipment, because once you do your man will forget how and you will be doing all the work.   I have taken this to heart on several things.  Even though I can run a tractor and a front end loader, I have not operated an chain saw or a tiller.  I leave those two things to hubs.  I do remember mowing the lawn years ago with my 6 month old baby strapped to my back and the Bishop stopping by and just running in the house and, I don't know what went on but I have never mowed the lawn again. I actually liked mowing the lawn.

I was a little apprehensive about running tiller, but it was fun.  I did not start it or stop it, I just took it around the garden a few times, so I can still play the faint hearted Susan, if it comes to being asked to actually till anything.  Hubs mixed up another batch of weed spray (also something I don't do) while I was running said equipment.  We were in for a bad wind storm, so I wanted to get the second spray done.  By the time I had emptied the sprayer it was way too windy to plant.

But we do that today.  I am anxious to get out and get started, the sun is shining and I want to get dirty.  Hoorah!

Did any of you get sage advice from your grandmother?

Have a great and productive day staying positive while you are in the negative.

Kim

  1. What kind of mixture do you use for weed killer? I've seen and tried various ones with poor results but it sounds like you have really good success with your recipe. Would you be willing to share it? Ranee (MN)

    1. Dawn dish soap, vinegar (white) Mix a gallon of white vinegar with 1/4 cup dawn dish soap, spray leaves, does not work as well on grass.

  2. I love tilling the garden. I have a small Mantis tiller - just my size. My goodness, I am so happy I learned how to use power tools when hubby was here. He taught me well. Heck, he even bought me many of my own power tools. Heck fire - girl power!!!!

  3. My mother said Daddy would not do something she wanted, like putting up a shelf. So, she said to him that she would do it herself and would get out the tools. He would say, "Oh, Hell. Stop it. You are going to hurt yourself" Then, he would do what she wanted. She said she was really going to build whatever and never did that to get him to do things. It would not work with my ex since either he could not do it, or let me carry something heavy when pregnant.

  5. I'm a widow for years do most of my own work but have adult kids who will help. Generally I like yard work. There's a fine line. It's not ok to be taken advantage of (by other's laziness ha!) and it's so important even if it's hard to make people step up and develop responsibility.

  7. My dad always said "Buy the house at the TOP of the hill". It was good advice, it saved me from a wet basement a few times.

  9. I like yard work, especially mowing. In fact, I don't let my husband mow. But he edges, weed eats and does the heavier jobs that include chain saws, etc.

    1. You are lucky when I have Hubby edge he does a really crappy job, but I still refuse to do it. Sometimes I hire a boy to come in and edge and that makes him mad, but then do a good job.
